Tattoo Aftercare in Bali

Bali is hot, humid and full of temptations: pools, waves, sunshine and scooter rides. A new tattoo can handle all of it once it has healed. Until then, a little care keeps your lines crisp and your skin happy. Always follow the specific instructions your artist gives you on the day; this guide covers the basics for the Bali climate.

The first 24 hours

  • Keep the wrap on for as long as your artist tells you. A clear second-skin film can usually stay on for a few days; a standard wrap comes off after a few hours.
  • Wash your hands before you touch the tattoo.
  • Remove the wrap, then rinse the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, unscented soap. Pat it dry with a clean paper towel; do not rub.
  • Let it breathe. Some clear fluid or ink on the surface is normal.

Days 2 to 14: the healing stretch

  • Wash gently two to three times a day, especially after sweating.
  • Apply a thin layer of unscented aftercare balm or moisturiser. In Bali’s humidity, less is more: a thick layer traps sweat and slows healing.
  • Expect itching and light flaking from around day four. Do not scratch or pick; tap the area lightly instead.
  • Wear loose, clean clothing over the tattoo and change sweaty clothes quickly.
  • Sleep on clean sheets and avoid lying directly on a fresh tattoo if you can.

Swimming, sun and sand

This is the big one on a Bali holiday. Water and sun are the two main reasons tattoos heal badly here.

  • No swimming for about two weeks. That means the ocean, pools, hot tubs and long baths. Short showers are fine.
  • Keep it out of direct sun while it heals. Cover it with loose clothing or stay in the shade. Do not put sunscreen on an unhealed tattoo.
  • Once healed, use SPF 50 every time the tattoo is in the sun. UV is the main reason tattoos fade over the years.
  • Avoid sand and dust on the fresh skin, and rinse gently if it gets dirty.

Planning your trip? Many guests book their tattoo towards the end of their stay, so beach days come first. Tell us your dates and we will suggest the best timing.

Rain, scooters and the gym

  • Rain is fine, but keep the tattoo clean and pat it dry afterwards.
  • On a scooter, cover the tattoo from sun and road dust with loose clothing.
  • Skip intense workouts for a few days. Heavy sweating and friction irritate fresh skin. If you do sweat, rinse and pat dry.
  • Avoid massages, scrubs and spa treatments on the tattooed area until it has healed.

When to get in touch

Some redness, tenderness and swelling in the first days is normal. Contact us, and see a doctor, if you notice redness that keeps spreading, increasing heat or pain, pus, a bad smell or a fever.

Questions while you heal? Message us on WhatsApp with a photo and we will help. Your artist would love to see the healed result too.
