Swimming After a Tattoo: How Long to Wait (Bali Guide)

Short answer: wait about two weeks before swimming after a new tattoo, and longer if it is still peeling, scabbed or shiny. The sea, pools and hotel spas are the main reason holiday tattoos heal badly in Bali, so it is worth planning your swim days around your session.

Why you should not swim with a fresh tattoo

A new tattoo is an open wound for the first days. Soaking it lets bacteria from pool or sea water reach broken skin, and long soaks can lift ink before the skin has closed. Chlorine and salt also dry the area, which makes peeling and itching worse.

WaterMain riskWhen it is usually OK
Ocean and surfBacteria, sand rubbing the skin, strong sunAfter the skin has fully closed, usually 2–4 weeks
Hotel or villa poolChlorine dries the skin; shared waterAbout 2 weeks, once peeling has stopped
Hot tub or spaWarm water helps bacteria growWait the longest, at least 3–4 weeks
ShowerLow risk if quickSame day, keep it short and pat dry

Bigger and more detailed pieces take longer. Your artist will tell you what applies to your tattoo.

How to plan swimming around a tattoo in Bali

  • Get tattooed near the end of your trip. Enjoy the beach first, then let the tattoo heal on the way home.
  • If you must be near water, stay in the shade and keep the tattoo dry. Waterproof film is not a licence to swim.
  • Plan dry days: temples, cafés, spa treatments that avoid the area, shopping in Kuta and Seminyak, or a cooking class.

Signs your tattoo is ready for the water

  • No more peeling or flaking
  • No scabs or shiny, raw-looking patches
  • No redness, swelling or tenderness when you touch it

If a tattoo becomes hot, very red, swollen or starts to weep after swimming, see a doctor or pharmacy. Our Bali aftercare guide covers daily care in the heat.

Frequently asked questions

How long after a tattoo can I swim in the ocean?

Most artists recommend waiting about two weeks, and up to four weeks for large pieces, until the skin has fully stopped peeling.

Can I swim with a waterproof bandage over my tattoo?

It is not recommended. Film can leak at the edges, and the tattoo still needs air to heal.

Can I shower after getting a tattoo?

Yes. Short showers are fine; avoid soaking and pat the tattoo dry with a clean towel.
